Arcade Fire talks about philanthropy at UT

Our Austin correspondent Lily Angelle attended a special lecture last night entitled “Hope, Haiti & Service,” where members of the band Arcade Fire spoke to University of Texas students about advocacy and volunteerism and urged them to get involved with relief efforts in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

Arcade Fire members Win and Will Butler, Régine Chassagne and Marika Anthony-Shaw talked about the group’s work with Partners in Health since 2007 to provide health care for people in Haiti. Win Butler said the band has donated more than $500,000 over the past four years and $1 from every concert ticket goes to the charity.

However, Win Butler cautioned that philanthropy is not just writing a check and sending it off – one also needs to make sure the money is going to the proper efforts.

“If the question of ‘is this useful’ isn’t coming up, then you’re doing something wrong,” he said. “If I donate a bunch of money and people end up going out and painting some schools when there’s massive unemployment, I’d be concerned.”

Some attendees grew impatient with the talk and walked out before the lecture was over. So partly to “put it in the faces” of those people, as Win said, the musicians produced a couple acoustic guitars and performed two songs from their 2004 debut album Funeral: “Haiti” and “Wake Up.”

Arcade Fire this weekend on ‘Austin City Limits’

With infectious melodies and introspective lyrics, Arcade Fire has won over the hearts of America with their harp-strumming, accordion-pumping, xylophone-tapping songs that are undeniably brilliant. On Saturday, the band makes their second appearance on “Austin City Limits” performing songs from their Grammy-winning album The Suburbs.

Taped in September just before the band’s appearance at the 2011 Austin City Limits festival, the program airs on PBS-TV this weekend. Check your local listings.

Video Du Jour: Arcade Fire

Posted in Rock Moment with tags , on December 29, 2011 by 30daysout

Arcade Fire has become one of the biggest bands around, since their Grammy win for Best Album earlier this year for The Suburbs. They released a new video, “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” which features only Regine Chassagne from the band. There’s also an interactive version of the video here … didn’t work so well for me but try your hand at it anyway.

Checkin’ In For Christmas

Posted in Rock Moment with tags , , , , , , , , on November 26, 2011 by 30daysout

Seems almost impossible that it’s already the Christmas season … I could’a sworn July was last week or something. You know time flies when you’re having fun, or not. And so this is Christmas.

This season, we’re gonna do the usual things we do – post blogs with a ton of Christmas music, review the best and worst of 2011 and generally bitch about the state of the world in which we’re livin.’ That’s how we roll, and we certainly appreciate you taking a little time to come and visit while we do that.

As I write this the windows are open and all down my street the neighbors are installing their blinking Christmas lights, their oversized inflatable Santa lawn snow globes and elaborate wrappings around the trees. Most annoying, just across the street somebody has plinky holiday music playing from some contraption in their front yard. Greeeeeaaaaaaaat.

And I went to the grocery store to buy some milk and beer for the weekend, then I stood in line for a while behind people purchasing giant TVs and strange electronic consoles (at the grocery store!). Don’t get me wrong – we certainly participated in Black Friday but we didn’t pepper spray anyone (although my wife made me wish I had some handy). Later on comes the hassle of erecting a tree, and negotiating which visits we must make to family members who wouldn’t care drive out to see us at any time of the year.

But each year we all manage to dig out at least a little bit of the true meaning of Christmas. We all manage to spend a small amount of time with the people we love or care about, and we show a little shred of love by sharing some of ourselves at a truly magical time of year. Or I hope we do – like I hope you do as well. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! So let the season begin …

The third and final day of the Austin City Limits festival had something for everyone – even cooler temperatures and mercifully, a sprinkling of rain. Headliners Arcade Fire closed out the event with a rousing set; here are the band’s first four songs, courtesy of the Austin City Limits festival webcast.
