Are you ready for some football – playoff style? We in Houston sure are: our hometown team the Texans made history this year by not only achieving the playoffs for the first time in their 10 years as a franchise, but they also won this first-ever playoff game.

So now the H-Town boys are gonna face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, and of course the winner of that game will go on to play for the AFC Championship and the right to go to the Super Bowl.

Tim Tebow and the Broncos may have the Lord on their side, but the Texans have some talented musicians in their corner. And we’re not talking about country hat-hack Clay Walker – we mean serious rappers like Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Chamillionaire. Here you go, have a little taste of this:

If the Geto Boys were still around, everyone in Baltimore would be really frightened. Ah well. Here’s another one, I honestly don’t know who the hell created this but the video is WAY better than the music.

This one is called the “Texans Red White and Blue Song” and from the looks of it, it’s officially sanctioned by the team. But we could be wrong.

No music to speak of here … just cheerleaders!

Until 1996, Houston’s football team was the Oilers. Here’s a taste of that freakin’ Oilers fight song.

Before the start of the Oakland-Houston NFL game on Sunday, the crowd in Houston’s Reliant Stadium observed a moment of silence in memory of Al Davis, the Raiders owner and professional football pioneer who died the day before.

The Raiders then went out and won the game, 25-20, which came down to a last-second attempt by Houston to score and move ahead for the win. That didn’t happen, as Texans quarterback Matt Schaub scrambled out of the pocket four yards away from the goal line and seeing a defender coming in fast to drop him, flung a bullet into the end zone. That wound up being intercepted and ending the game.

But no matter who won, it was an incredible game – it was thrilling, exciting and entertaining, all you would want from a football game played at the highest level. That’s the legacy of Al Davis, and wherever he is right now I hope he’s very proud. (And I’m sure that bastard worked some supernatural stuff to help the Raiders win and to make it rain on our sorry asses as we staggered back to our cars.)

Yeah, it was a bummer to see the home team go down in the final seconds but no NFL game is a gimme, no matter what the prognosticators say. Our team is going to win again, and the Texans will have some good days too. I’m not a Raider fan by any stretch of the imagination and I don’t want to diminish the great effort by the Texans, but it kind of felt appropriate to have the Raiders win on this day. In a game hard-fought by both sides, they may have fought a little harder.

And it was a cool day because we got to meet Los Lonely Boys, the Grammy Award-winning trio that sang the National Anthem. Like I said, a great day.

Nothing says football like Faith Hill in a black miniskirt and thigh-high boots!

As I write this the Go Daddy.com Bowl game is on TV, the highly anticipated contest between … uh, one college football team against, ahem, another college team. This one is the 31st college bowl game since Dec. 18, and it isn’t the last – there are four more games, including the AT&T Cotton Bowl, the Papajohns.com Bowl and the Kraft Bowl.

You think I’m making up this crap? Check it out.

Before they play the national championship game (Monday night’s Citi BCS National Championship) there’s also the beginning of the NFL playoffs this Saturday. Yeah! Enough football for ya? Certainly plenty of sponsors, thank you!

Here’s my advice. Ice down some beer, get some snacks, turn on the TV and turn down the sound. You can watch the football without some hairdo telling you what’s happening, can’t you? Instead of hours of droning, you can play some music. If you wish, you can play some football music. Thank us later.

Unitas We Stand – The Music of Football Part 1

Texans must beat the Patriots this weekend for a shot at the playoffs - good luck, boys.

Now that Christmas has come and gone, you know what’s next – New Years? No: it’s the Super Bowl. It is time to start wondering who’s going to get into the elite circle of four teams that will participate first in the AFC and NFC championships, then the two that will advance to the big Super Bowl 44 in Miami on Feb. 7. You gotta figure the Colts will be right in there for the AFC, so will the Chargers, the Bengals and the Patriots. Over in the NFC the Saints, the Vikings, Eagles and Cardinals all look competitive.

There are a handful of teams holding slim dreams of making the playoffs, including our hometown Houston Texans. In order for the Texans to make the playoffs all sorts of things need to happen, including a win over the Patriots this weekend, an attack on New York City by space aliens, Vince Lombardi coming back from the dead and possibly hell freezing over. (Hey, it snowed in Houston a couple of weeks ago so the atmospheric conditions are certainly getting there.)
