‘Lemmy’ is a mother****er of a documentary

Don’t know about you, but my calendar’s marked for January of next year, when the documentary Lemmy: 49% Mother**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch hits U.S. theaters.

Motörhead singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister has spent the better part of the past four decades as the living embodiment of the rock and roll lifestyle.  Directed by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski, the film reveals Lemmy as never before and has already taken critics by storm, premiering to raves earlier this year at SXSW and screening at film festivals worldwide.

Boasting a star-studded lineup including Metallica, Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Jarvis Cocker, Joan Jett, Billy Bob Thornton, Slash, pro wrestler Triple H, and members of The Clash, Guns ‘N Roses, Jane’s Addiction, and more, the film offers a rare and revealing look at Lemmy’s life with candid at-home interviews, studio sessions, and priceless live concert footage.  “Lemmy rocks,” raves Variety, while Mojo calls the film “an unflinching and deeply humanizing portrait of one of modern music’s truly iconic figures.”

Lemmy hits select U.S. theaters beginning mid-January, mainly in large markets.  The DVD, a-two disc set with 4 hours of bonus features, will be released Feb. 15 and will be available for digital download and on BluRay.  The film has been a major hit at dozens of festivals around the world, including screenings in France, England, Spain, Australia, The Netherlands, South Korea and Chile.

In addition, Motörhead is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary. The Grammy-winning band will release its new album, The Wörld is Yours, in February, and kicks off its 2011 North American tour on Jan. 25 in Anaheim.

Review: Lots o’ New Stuff

As usual, the new album racks fill up between SXSW and Record Store Day next weekend … and there is a lot of good new stuff out there.  So let’s get right to the best:

J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf hasn’t put out a studio set since 2002 but with the new Midnight Sessions he turns back the clock with a collection of excellent songs ranging from the elegaic rocker “The Night Comes Down (For Willy DeVille)” to the delicate acoustic ballad “The Green Fields of Summer.”  The album swerves from loose, Rolling Stones-flavored rockers like “Tragedy” (a duet with Shelby Lynne), Americana ear candy like “Always Asking For You” and love-man funkiness with “Overnight Lows” and a cover of the Lou Donaldson classic “Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky.”  In addition to Shelby Lynne, guests include Neko Case and Merle Haggard.  Highly recommended.

At one point on Women + Country, Jakob Dylan sings “Everybody’s Hurting,” and he is talking about an America that’s been shaken down to the roots – namely the common hard-working Americans who can’t see a future for themselves and their loved ones.  On this album Dylan visits the America that was most vividly depicted by the Band so many decades ago, and the music (produced by T-Bone Burnett, in the style of the Plant-Krauss masterpiece Raising Sand) lends the songs a ghostly, dreamlike quality.  But lest you think this is all depressing stuff, “Lend A Hand” assumes a jaunty French Quarter strut and the opener “Nothing But The Whole Wide World” perfectly blends Dylan’s voice with backing singers Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, who drift in and out throughout the album.  This album has really grown on me, and you should give it a chance to grow on you too.

Oh Man, Christmas Is Coming!

Santa ponders Tiger Woods' Christmas list

How can Christmas be so close?  It was just the Fourth of July … or it seems like that.  Waitin’ for that next paycheck to roll around before we get out in the trenches for some combat shoppin’.  No time, no time.  But there’s always time for a few songs.

Happy Birthday, Paul!

One of the greatest songwriters and singers in rock and roll, Paul McCartney turns 67 on Thursday (June 18).  With the Beatles and later as a solo performer and bandleader, McCartney created some of the best (and worst) music in rock and roll history.  He isn’t as cool today as he was in the 1960s, or in the early part of the 1970s, but even at the twilight of his career McCartney is still a formidable talent.  His album Electric Arguments, released as The Fireman late last year, was considered to be one of the year’s best and a return to form for McCartney.  A collaboration with fellow legend Bob Dylan may be in the works – if it happens, that would be another milestone in an incredible career.

In 1965 McCartney wrote “Yesterday,” which the Guinness Book of World Records says is the most covered song ever.  It has been covered more than 3,000 times and in the 20th century alone the song was performed more than 7 million times.  We thought about doing a marathon with different covers of one song (as we did a few weeks ago on Bob Dylan’s birthday) but thought it would be more fun to just dig up songs from throughout McCartney’s career.  So after the jump you have some of McCartney’s best music as performed by others, as well as a few versions of “Yesterday.”  McCartney may be rather unfairly judged by his output over recent years, but most of this shit rocks.  Happy birthday!

30 Days Out (From Christmas): Heavy Holidays

Day 13 – No Christmas is complete without some tunes from our heavy metal brethren.  They always put a pretty amusing spin on the holidays, and they’re much closer to Rock and Roll than the likes of Brenda Lee and Bing Crosby.  Our Ronnie James Dio, Lemmy Kilmister and two other selections today are taken from the new We Wish You A Metal Christmas and a Headbanging New Year.  The version of “Silent Night” here with Chuck Billy (Testament) and Scott Ian (Anthrax) is definitely the true spirit of Christmas.  “Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)” is from Savatage, which later morphed into the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  Check out our exclusive holiday interview with TSO singer Tommy Farese here.

Holy Headbangers! Rattling the Metal Bucket

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on August 26, 2008 by 30daysout

A big bucket o’ stuff from the metal end of the spectrum today, to help shake loose the remaining aftereffects of our encounter with the Masters of Metal tour last weekend.

Mötorhead hits stores today with a new album, Mötorizer.   It’s the 24th album for this venerable metal trio, led by bassist/head growler Lemmy Kilmister and aided and abetted by mainstays Phil Campbell (guitar) and Mikkey Dee (drums).  Lemmy is 62 years old, but he hasn’t slowed down – if you know anything about Mötorhead, you know their rock is basic, straightforward and in-your-face like a Pittsburgh Steelers lineman.  Mötorizer, energized by tunes like “Rock Out” (an anthem) and “Runaround Man,” is out of control like a Harley on a kindergarten playground.

Black Ice, the first studio album in eight years from AC/DC, goes on sale Oct. 20 exclusively at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and the AC/DC website.  No word yet on what extras the package will contain, but it’s likely one bundle will include a DVD with a 1996 show from Madrid.  And a few weeks later, the Scottish-Australian rock unit will mount a world tour, their first since 2001.  We couldn’t get our hands on any downloads, but the AC/DC website has some tantalizing snippets from Black Ice.

Review: Masters of Metal, Houston

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , , , on August 24, 2008 by 30daysout

It was a beautifully metal moment: at the same moment guitar god Tony Iommi begins his bone-chilling solo in the song “Time Machine,” a bolt of lightning slashes across the sky above the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.  The Masters of Metal tour rolled through Houston Saturday night (Aug. 23) and despite this impromptu effect, most of the pyrotechnics were on the stage.
