We’ve been liking us some Motörhead lately, as we eagerly await the release of the new movie Lemmy: 49% Mother**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch next year.  Meanwhile, we can enjoy “Get Back In Line,” a video from the band’s new album The Wörld Is Yours, to be released in the United States next year.

‘Lemmy’ is a mother****er of a documentary

Don’t know about you, but my calendar’s marked for January of next year, when the documentary Lemmy: 49% Mother**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch hits U.S. theaters.

Motörhead singer and bassist Lemmy Kilmister has spent the better part of the past four decades as the living embodiment of the rock and roll lifestyle.  Directed by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski, the film reveals Lemmy as never before and has already taken critics by storm, premiering to raves earlier this year at SXSW and screening at film festivals worldwide.

Boasting a star-studded lineup including Metallica, Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Jarvis Cocker, Joan Jett, Billy Bob Thornton, Slash, pro wrestler Triple H, and members of The Clash, Guns ‘N Roses, Jane’s Addiction, and more, the film offers a rare and revealing look at Lemmy’s life with candid at-home interviews, studio sessions, and priceless live concert footage.  “Lemmy rocks,” raves Variety, while Mojo calls the film “an unflinching and deeply humanizing portrait of one of modern music’s truly iconic figures.”

Lemmy hits select U.S. theaters beginning mid-January, mainly in large markets.  The DVD, a-two disc set with 4 hours of bonus features, will be released Feb. 15 and will be available for digital download and on BluRay.  The film has been a major hit at dozens of festivals around the world, including screenings in France, England, Spain, Australia, The Netherlands, South Korea and Chile.

In addition, Motörhead is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary. The Grammy-winning band will release its new album, The Wörld is Yours, in February, and kicks off its 2011 North American tour on Jan. 25 in Anaheim.

Sampler Daze: A Bunch Of Stiff Records

Bunch-Of-Stiffs---Front

Back in the days of dinosaurs and vinyl LPs, record labels used to put out “samplers,” full albums with a track each from their top artists and usually budget priced.  In 1976, the pioneering punk/New Wave label Stiff Records came on to the scene and they put out an 11-song sampler LP in early 1977 to promote the first artists they signed.

Stiff---Elvis-Costello

Elvis Costello

A Bunch of Stiff Records now sounds prescient, because the Stiff roster included Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Wreckless Eric, Graham Parker, the Tyla Gang and this guy named Elvis Costello – who would all become the most influential U.K. rockers of the era.  Perhaps the most ear-catching track on the album, Elvis’ “Less Than Zero” was one of three songs on the LP that had been issued as singles.  This version is slightly different than the track that appears on My Aim Is True.

Stiff also had, for some reason, Motörhead – the heavy metal rockers were formed in 1975 by Lemmy Kilmister, formerly a roadie for Jimi Hendrix.  Like a few of the early Stiff Records artists, they were under contract to United Artists when they cut sides for Stiff so there was a bit of a legal tangle that prevented some of this music, like the single “White Line Fever”, from seeing the light of day until years later.

Halloween Pot Luck, Part 2

It has been pointed out that if we post something called “Halloween Pot Luck,” as we did yesterday, possibly it should have something to do with Halloween.  Well, OK … but it was a nice photo, eh?  Anyway, let’s try again with some genuine Halloween music.  Enjoy your Halloween, remember to use your powers for good and not evil, and be safe tonight.

Holy Headbangers! Rattling the Metal Bucket

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on August 26, 2008 by 30daysout

A big bucket o’ stuff from the metal end of the spectrum today, to help shake loose the remaining aftereffects of our encounter with the Masters of Metal tour last weekend.

Mötorhead hits stores today with a new album, Mötorizer.   It’s the 24th album for this venerable metal trio, led by bassist/head growler Lemmy Kilmister and aided and abetted by mainstays Phil Campbell (guitar) and Mikkey Dee (drums).  Lemmy is 62 years old, but he hasn’t slowed down – if you know anything about Mötorhead, you know their rock is basic, straightforward and in-your-face like a Pittsburgh Steelers lineman.  Mötorizer, energized by tunes like “Rock Out” (an anthem) and “Runaround Man,” is out of control like a Harley on a kindergarten playground.

Black Ice, the first studio album in eight years from AC/DC, goes on sale Oct. 20 exclusively at Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and the AC/DC website.  No word yet on what extras the package will contain, but it’s likely one bundle will include a DVD with a 1996 show from Madrid.  And a few weeks later, the Scottish-Australian rock unit will mount a world tour, their first since 2001.  We couldn’t get our hands on any downloads, but the AC/DC website has some tantalizing snippets from Black Ice.

Review: Masters of Metal, Houston

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , , , on August 24, 2008 by 30daysout

It was a beautifully metal moment: at the same moment guitar god Tony Iommi begins his bone-chilling solo in the song “Time Machine,” a bolt of lightning slashes across the sky above the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.  The Masters of Metal tour rolled through Houston Saturday night (Aug. 23) and despite this impromptu effect, most of the pyrotechnics were on the stage.
