Repost: Why do all this stuff again?

Monsters are misunderstood – it’s tough to frighten people and terrorize the countryside day in, and day out.  Surely monsters have to unwind; as the magazine cover suggests, they may enjoy a little recreational hula-hoop activity.  Or they may just like to rock out.

Sorry, we’ve been a little into our day jobs lately – that, and listening endlessly to Neil Young. So we just noticed Halloween’s a few weeks away, and that is always a great opportunity for some cool rock tunes.

So here you go – don’t be scared!

30 Days Out (From Christmas): The Ventures

Day Six – One of the all-time holiday classics is The Ventures’ Christmas Album, from 1965.  The Ventures were a four-piece band from California who recorded only instrumentals with their trademark two electric lead guitars.  Their sound helped to codify “surf rock” in the early 1960s and their single “Walk, Don’t Run” hit No. 2 on the pop charts in 1960.  The Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.

The Ventures Christmas Album went to No. 5 on ventures2the album charts, which was unusual for a collection of holiday standards.  The novelty came in the approach: each song on the album begins with the first few bars of a popular rock song from the mid-1960s.  So, “Sleigh Ride” opens with some licks from “Walk, Don’t Run” and “Jingle Bell Rock” kicks off with the signature from Johnny Rivers’ version of “Memphis.”   You really have to hear The Beatles’ “I Feel Fine” morph into “Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer” – these boys really had the chops.  See if you can identify the “intros” to all these songs!
